Disease Detection in Marine Mammals & Feral Pigs

Marine Mammals
The goal of this research project is to identify and characterize viral (herpesvirus, poxvirus, morbillivirus) and bacterial (Brucella ceti) pathogens found in cetaceans (whales and dolphins) in Hawai’i. Tissue samples are collected from cetaceans that strand on the beach. Additionally, we are using these cetacean samples to develop a suite of laboratory and field based diagnostic assays to help prevent transmission of these zoonotic pathogens from animals to humans.

Feral Pigs
The goal of this research project is to identify and characterize Brucella suis, which is a bacteria found in feral pigs in Hawai’i. We are working with local Hawaiian hunters to collect feral pig tissue samples. Additionally, we will use these samples to design a field based diagnostic assay for use by community members. This will help prevent transmission of this bacterial pathogen from pigs to humans.
